San Rafael, Marin County
San Rafael grew up around Mission San Rafael Arcangel, founded in 1817 as a hospital outpost where ailing converts from the fog of San Francisco could recover. A replica of the chapel, built in 1949, stands near the original site. Fourth Street, the main street, appeared in the cruising scenes of American Graffiti and is home to an art deco movie theater restored as a film center.
